Whether you’re dealing with an emergency pre-wedding stain or looking to preserve your gown after the big day, cleaning a wedding dress can feel overwhelming. Bridal gowns are often made from delicate fabrics like lace, silk, and tulle, which require special care to avoid damage. The good news is that with the right approach, many stains and marks can be treated safely.

We have seen it all when it comes to wedding dress stains and we know all the tricks for saving dresses and keeping them in good condition for years to come. In this guide we’ll run through:

Steps for washing a bridal gown at home safely

You can wash your wedding dress at home, but it requires a lot of care to protect those gorgeous, delicate fabrics. The safest approach is to spot-clean any stains first, then give your gown a gentle hand soak in the bathtub. One golden rule is avoid washing machines completely; they can easily damage lace, beading, and delicate stitching.

Follow these steps to clean your dress safely while keeping that bridal sparkle intact:

1. Prep

  • Check the Label – Every wedding dress is unique, and so are its care instructions. Always check the label to identify the fabric and see if there are any specific cleaning guidelines. Some materials like silk or heavily embellished gowns may still be better handled by professionals.
  • Deep Clean your Bath – Time to channel your inner Cinderella. Scrub your bathtub thoroughly to remove any residue that could stain your dress. Make sure all cleaning products are rinsed away completely, especially bleach or harsh chemicals.
  • Spot Test – Before applying any detergent or stain remover, test it on a hidden part of the dress (like an inner seam or underlayer). This helps ensure the product won’t damage or discolour the fabric.

2. Treat Stains

  • Apply Treatment – Use a gentle stain remover that you trust and have already spot tested. Focus on common areas like the hem, underarms, or neckline.
  • Blot – Use a clean white cloth to gently blot the stain. Avoid dragging or rubbing the fabric, as this can spread the stain and damage delicate materials.

3. Give Your Gown a Relaxing Soak

  • Fill Your Bath Tub – Fill your bath with lukewarm or cold water and add a small amount of mild detergent suitable for delicate fabrics.
  • Let it Soak – Lay the dress carefully in the water and allow it to soak for 30 minutes to an hour. Think of it as a well deserved spa moment for your gown after its big day.
  • Agitate – Lightly swirl the dress in the water to loosen dirt. If certain areas need extra attention, gently move the fabric through the water, still avoiding rubbing or scrubbing.
  • Rinse – Drain the tub and refill it with clean water. Repeat this process until all soap bubbles are gone and the water runs clear.

Is it safe to machine wash a wedding dress?

No, it’s not safe to machine wash a wedding dress, even on a gentle wash. Machine washing wedding dresses is not recommended because there is a huge risk of damaging the delicate fabrics, tearing or ruining embellishments. Professional dry cleaning is the safest way to preserve the gown. When deciding where to send your wedding dress, ask your bridal boutique for recommendations of dry cleaners they trust. At Tilly’s in Leamington Spa we love each of our brides’ gowns as much as they do. We do everything we can to help brides send their dress to the right place so that it gets the love and care it deserves.

How to clean grass and dirt stains from a wedding dress hem

Your wedding dress has probably had the time of its life dancing on the grass, gliding across the floor but chances are that means it has seen better days. Don’t panic! With a little care (ok maybe a lot ), you can tackle those grass and dirt stains without harming your beautiful gown.

First Things First: Consider a Professional Cleaner

Before diving into DIY stain removal, the safest option is always to take your wedding dress to a professional garment cleaner who specialises in bridalwear. Bridal fabrics can be delicate, and experts know exactly how to treat them without causing damage.

Set on trying to remove stains on your wedding dress at home?

If you’d like to attempt cleaning the hem yourself first, follow these simple steps:

1. Let Mud Dry Completely

If the hem is muddy, resist the urge to clean it straight away. Let the mud dry fully, then gently brush it off with a soft brush. This helps remove most of the dirt without spreading the stain.

2. Use a Trusted Stain Remover

Once the loose dirt is gone, apply a stain remover you trust. Many people find a stain remover pen useful for small areas like the hemline.

3. Try a Gentle Natural Solution

For very delicate fabrics, start with something milder. Mix lemon juice with cold water, lightly dab the stained area and blot gently with a clean cloth This can help lift light grass stains without harsh chemicals.

4. Blot, Don’t Rub

When treating stains on a wedding dress, blotting is your best friend.

  • Dab the stain gently with a clean cloth
  • Avoid rubbing or dragging the fabric

Rubbing can push the stain deeper into the fibres and damage delicate materials like lace, silk, or tulle.

5. Test First (This Step Is a Non-Negotiable)

Before using any stain remover, always test it on a hidden part of the dress like the inside of the hem. This checks the product won’t discolour or damage the fabric.

How long does professional wedding dress cleaning take?

A standard professional wedding dress cleaning service takes 1-3 weeks. Factors like fabric, detailing or severe staining can affect how long the process takes. If the worst has happened and you need your wedding dress cleaned before the big day we recommend giving as much time as possible and booking your cleaning service as early as possible especially in busy wedding seasons.

How to preserve a wedding dress after cleaning

After your wedding dress has been professionally cleaned, it’s important to store it properly so it stays beautiful for years to come. Keep your dress in a cool, dark, and dry place in your home. Avoid storing it in a loft or basement (a confusing addition to that rule, we know), as these areas often have extreme temperature fluctuations, high humidity, and potential pests that can damage delicate fabrics. For the best protection, store your gown upright in an acid free preservation box or a breathable acid-free garment bag. These materials help prevent yellowing and protect the fabric over time. It’s also best to avoid plastic storage, as plastic traps moisture which can cause yellowing and fabric damage. With the right care, your dress will stay just as lovely as the day you wore it.
