Choosing a wedding dress can be very overwhelming, there is a lot of pressure to find something that checks all of the boxes (and there are a lot of boxes). This often leaves brides thinking “where do I even begin”. We’ve compiled our years of wedding dress shopping experience into a quick and simple guide to help you get started.
In this article we’ll cover:
1. Know Your Budget
Before you get ready to say “yes” to your dream wedding dress it’s so important to set your dress budget. Your budget will help guide everything from which designers to explore, to where you shop, and even down to the sparkly extras like accessories and veils. Starting this process early means fewer surprises later, no one wants unexpected costs sneaking up on them (trust us, we’ve been there!).
Remember, the price tag on the dress itself isn’t the full picture. You need to factor in alterations, accessories, and veils, too. Tailoring is usually needed to get that perfect fit, and if you’re dreaming of customising your gown to make it fabulously one of a kind, that comes with a cost as well.
We recommend starting the wedding dress shopping process by setting a complete dress budget, one that includes your dream shoes, accessories, and veil. Once you price up those details, the remaining amount becomes your wedding dress budget. With that number in mind, start browsing dresses online, exploring designers, and getting a feel for styles (and price ranges!) that speak to you.
When it’s time for your bridal appointment, let them know your budget. This helps your stylist select gowns that not only take your breath away but also fit your price range, making your wedding dress shopping experience as seamless and special as possible.
2. Nail Your Wedding Style
Before you fall head over heels for a gown, take a moment to think about your wedding as a whole: your vibe, location, venue, and season. These details set the tone for your big day and can have a huge influence on the style of dress that’s right for you.
Once you’ve got those details in place, you can start searching for a dress that not only makes you feel fabulous but also fits seamlessly with your setting. If you’re saying “I do” on a beach, a flowing boho wedding dress is a beautiful choice, it captures the relaxed, beachy vibe while keeping you comfortable from your vows to dancing under the stars. For a dreamy winter wonderland wedding, consider adding sleeves to your gown to stay warm and elegant as you celebrate. The perfect dress should make you feel comfortable as well as fabulous, so you can focus on what is important, enjoying your big day.
“We find brides who have a few key items planned are more prepared and find the whole situation less daunting… a Christmas wedding in Scotland is very different to a Summer wedding on the Amalfi coast.”
3. Explore Silhouettes & Fabrics
Before you choose your wedding dress, you should get familiar with the different styles and silhouettes on offer. The right silhouette and fabric will make you feel comfortable, confident and like the best version of you.
Start by getting familiar with the classics:
- A-Line: Universally flattering, this timeless shape cinches at the waist and flows softly to the floor perfect for that effortless “floaty and romantic” vibe.
- Ball Gown: With a fitted bodice and voluminous skirt, this silhouette is all about drama, twirls, and happily-ever-after energy.
- Mermaid: Curve-hugging and glam, this style flares out below the knee for that wow-factor walk down the aisle.
- Fit-and-Flare: A little softer than mermaid, it balances curve appeal with easy movement ideal for dancing all night!
- Corset Bodice: A current favorite! Corset-style gowns feature structured boning and delicate lace-up or illusion details that shape the waist and add a touch of vintage-meets-modern elegance.
When exploring fabrics, consider both look and feel. Luxe satins and mikado are smooth and structured, chiffon and tulle are light and airy, and lace adds that dreamy touch of texture and tradition.
Try a few different styles, you don’t have to tie yourself to just one, experiment with different types of gowns and see which one makes you feel the most fabulously you.
4. Research and Try On Dresses
When it comes to choosing the perfect wedding dress, research and forward planning is key. Browse bridal designers, scroll through real wedding photos, and save styles that you love. Researching the styles that will complement your body type and having a few favorite silhouettes or details in mind will help your stylist pull the perfect options once you’re in the boutique.
Book your bridal appointments well in advance, especially if you’re shopping during peak wedding planning season or at popular boutiques. At Tilly’s we recommend booking 6-9 months before your big day to leave plenty of time for fittings and alterations.
When considering who to bring wedding dress shopping, think quality over quantity. Bring two to three people who know you best, your mum, sister, best friend, or maid of honour. Choose the people who’ll be honest but kind, supportive, and just as excited as you are. Too many opinions can get overwhelming, so keep your circle small and positive.
Remember, stay open minded! So many brides fall in love with a wedding dress that they never expected. Trust your instincts, twirl, sit, and move around in each dress and choose the gown that feels right for you.
5. Trust Your Instincts
When you’ve found ‘the one’, you’ll feel it. It might be a rush of excitement, or a calm sense of “this is me.” It doesn’t have to involve tears or dramatic music, sometimes it’s just the quiet confidence that you don’t want to take the dress off.
The signs you’ve found the right wedding dress:
- You can picture yourself walking down the aisle in it and smiling every step of the way.
- You stop comparing it to other dresses.
- You can’t stop looking at it or thinking about it
- You feel beautiful, comfortable, and completely yourself.
- You start creating a look – imaging it with your dream shoes, hair and veil
And remember, your happiness matters most. Whether you fall in love with the very first gown or need a few more try-ons to be sure, trust that your journey is uniquely yours. Don’t let outside opinions drown out your own joy.
What if I don’t love any wedding dresses after trying many on?
If you don’t love any wedding dress you’ve tried on, take a breath, it’s completely okay. Sometimes the magic doesn’t show up on the first (or tenth!) try and that’s completely ok. Give yourself permission to step back, pause, and reset. A little break from wedding dress shopping and even from scrolling through endless gowns can do wonders for your clarity.
Wedding dress shopping is a big moment, and a lot of us grow up imagining it. So if it doesn’t feel like a fairytale right away, don’t be hard on yourself.
When you’re ready to dive back in, try exploring options outside the traditional box. You might feel unexpectedly amazing in a chic jumpsuit or a short dress. Also, remember the perfect dress doesn’t always exist on the rack, alterations and custom touches can transform a “maybe” into a breathtaking, made for you moment.
You will find something that makes you feel like the very best version of yourself. Trust the process and trust yourself.
