What Is a Bridal Sample Sale?
A bridal sample sale is where boutiques sell their sample dresses at heavily reduced prices. These are the gowns brides have tried on in our bridal appointments – which means:
- They’ve been loved
- They’re usually size UK 12-14
- Their condition is reflected in the price
- And once they’re gone… they’re gone
Think designer gowns for a fraction of the original cost. At Tilly Trotters in Leamington Spa we’re talking prices from as little as £500.
Sample Sale Rule 1: Be Ready to Buy
When you go to a bridal sample sale, it’s important that you’re ready to buy. It’s all about knowing what you like and trusting your gut. If you leave your appointment “to have a think”, you run the risk of another bride snapping up your dream dress five minutes later. There’s only one of each gown, so decisions need to be made on the spot (no pressure).
What to expect at your appointment
Sample sales are a little different from standard bridal appointments, so here’s what to expect:
- Appointments are shorter than normal fittings
- Styles and silhouettes are limited to what’s available
- You won’t be able to try on non-sale dresses
- Most sample sizes tend to be UK 12–14 (though we usually have a good variation)
Our lovely team will always advise what alterations may be possible, and we’ll send you away with contact details for our trusted, recommended seamstresses. Trust us, they can work some serious magic.
Who to Bring To a Sample Sale Appointment
Choosing who to bring to your bridal appointment in normal circumstances is difficult enough, choosing who to bring to your sample sale appointment is even harder. A sample sale is the place to be strong and decisive.
Too many opinions can:
- Confuse you
- Waste time
- Lead you to trying dresses that aren’t your style at all
Choose one or two people who get your vision and will hype you up, not confuse you.
Sizes & Alterations
The majority of our sample dresses are UK 12–14, and there is usually only one of each gown available.
Fit isn’t everything on the hanger. At a Tilly’s wedding dress sample sale one of our team will always be on hand to advise what alterations may be possible to help a dress fit you perfectly. We’ll also make sure you leave with the contact details for our incredible, trusted seamstresses, because a little tailoring can completely transform a sample sale gown.
Think of sample sale sizing as a starting point, you can alter customise and style the sample dress into your dream wedding gown.
Is a Sample Sale Right for You?
Full transparency, bridal dress sample sales are amazing, but they’re not for everyone.
Sample sales are perfect if:
- You’ve already tried on dresses and know what shapes you like
- You’re open minded but decisive
- You love a bargain
- You aren’t afraid to commit
Sample sales aren’t ideal if:
- You’re at the very start of your wedding dress journey
- You want hours of trying on every possible style
- You’re unsure what suits you yet
If that’s you, we’d always recommend booking a longer, in-depth private bridal appointment instead. During this appointment, we can help you explore different styles and find your perfect bridal style. There will be more time to experiment and think.
Your Bridal Shop Sample Sale Questions Answered
When are bridal sample sales?
Bridal sample sales happen all year as bridal boutiques clear out old styles and make room for new designs. However, the peak times for sample bridal sales are January-February and August and September.
What should I wear to a sample sale?
Wear light, easy to remove clothing, you’ll need to change quickly. Sample sales can be intense, so be ready to try on dresses like your life depends on it. Stick to nude underwear and bring a strapless bra to make trying dresses on a smooth process.
